Vanilla here means the server reports no modded flag: stock 1x gather, no plugin-driven kits, shops or teleports, and the same progression curve Facepunch ships. It is the version of the game everything else is balanced against.

Vanilla wipes run long. Without boosted gather the first day is genuinely spent on stone and wood, bases get built in phases rather than in one sitting, and a raid costs enough sulfur that people actually think about whether a target is worth it. That makes population stability the thing to look for - a vanilla server that still shows 120 players on day ten is worth far more than one that spiked to 200 on wipe night.
